How does a DBS check differ from a CRB check?

A DBS check and a CRB check refer to the same type of background screening, but the terminology has changed. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) was replaced by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in 2012. While the CRB check was the previous system for checking criminal records, the DBS check is the current process that includes additional functions, such as barring individuals from working with vulnerable groups. Therefore, when referring to background checks today, it is appropriate to use the term DBS check.
